The Magician's Nephew

Before the wardrobe, before the White Witch’s reign, before the Pevensies ever set foot in Narnia or in the great country house of a professor, that professor was a boy who went on his own adventures with a pair of magical rings that opened the door to other worlds. After Digory’s eccentric and power-hungry Uncle Andrew (unhealthy Type 3) uses magic to send them into the mysterious Wood between the Worlds, the children stumble into Charn, a dying world where they awaken Jadis (Type 8), the proud and terrifying sorceress who will later become the White Witch. Their journey leads them to Narnia at the moment of its creation, sung into being by the great lion Aslan (Type 8), who brings light, life, and hope to the newly born land.

Along the way, they meet Strawberry, a humble London cab-horse transformed into the noble flying steed Fledge (Type 9), and witness Aslan's tender mercy as Digory struggles with a heartbreaking choice that could save his ailing mother—or doom Narnia to darkness.
